Handmade Basins: a beautiful and functional addition to your home.

Posted by Debbie Morgan on

We’ve had Italian filmmakers, Welsh action photographers, and now some English creative writers came to stay with us. Here’s what they had to say:

We were fortunate enough to stay with Kim and Debbie for a week in August and came to the swift conclusion that we’d lived our lives surrounded by inferior pottery - and it didn’t have to be this way.

It’s easiest to sum it up with an example from our stay – the handbasin. A handbasin is not something you can really rave about to your friends (not without sounding like a lunatic anyway) but there is something satisfying about an object that sits just right, that works exactly how you need, that makes things just that bit easier.

Kim’s basins have sloped and smooth edges to avoid splash with generous depth to avoid awkward, cramped hand-washing. Being made from a natural material, the pottery warms and holds heat too. As we are from the UK with a lot of sharp, cold mornings, this coziness is especially appreciated! Beyond the practical elements, the basin is also an eye-catching feature of the bathroom every time you walk in. In our own house, the basins sit completely unnoticed because they are just so... bland. It’s a small thing, but Kim’s work, from the mugs and tableware up to larger works (like basins) are all a statement – they look gorgeous and unique and they fit effortlessly into the room because everything is thrown by hand so they can be adjusted to suit any space.

It is obvious that all of Kim’s pottery is made with the careful, practical eye of a workman who knows every detail of how to make something both functional and beautiful. Because their home is filled with Kim’s work (benefits of marrying a potter!) Kim and Debbie don’t really notice all the little details of the work which just make things that little bit easier, but we gush about them. Having lived in a world of inferior pottery, it has made us more than a little jealous: it’s not huge or life-changing, but it is wonderful to be surrounded by things that just work. No knack. No compromise. A piece of functional art creating joy in your home. Sadly, now we’ve got to go back (and we don’t want to leave!)

... But before we go, we are inquiring about Kim’s international shipping rates.
